CONSUMER PROTECTION IN DIGITAL ERA: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
ABSTRACT
E-commerce has grown in popularity not just as a result of increased Internet access, but also as a result of the growth of business units outside their geographical boundaries by allowing transactions to take place anywhere in the world. As India's e-commerce sector expands, a variety of concerns about consumer safety through this platform have arisen. It is undeniable that the Internet has supplied customers with strong tools for conducting online searches for goods and services. E-commerce has evolved into more than a technology and has become an essential component of global business and trade. Many issues arise with the constant developments in technology and digital markets. One of the main concerns of e-consumers is the protection of their privacy. E-consumers also live in the constant fear of being scammed by online sellers. Other issues that concern the e-consumer are deceptive advertising and unfair trade practices, uncertainty regarding products' merchantability, refund rules that are difficult to comprehend, insufficient and unclear information on the vendor, etc. Despite the enormous expansion of e-commerce, e-customers are searching for relevant consumer protection rules and laws to ensure that their rights in electronic transactions are recognized. The Indian government’s implementation of the CPA may be viewed as an earnest act since it has increased consumer rights, increased penalties, and expedited the resolution of ongoing cases. It has been innovative in several respects, and it even references e-commerce firms, which was a new word in 1986. This gives individual and small merchants a place on such platforms and ensures that they are treated fairly.
